This performance of Showgirls is the culmination of Karen Bernard’s spring residency at BkSD. Karen is known for creating a storm of references on the body. In Showgirls, she delves into a delicious deconstruction of glamour in decline. Using evocative imagery of a crumbling Venice juxtaposed with sumptuously adorned dancers in high heels who strut their stuff unapologetically, Bernard orchestrates a visually rich and thought provoking performance that swirls around the audience. Bernard’s Showgirls recognize their imperfections and deny those of the world around them, creating an emotionally charged and complex vision of nostalgia.
Showgirls is created and performed by Karen Bernard. Collaborators include dramaturg Andi Stover; performers Jil Guyon, Rachel Thorne Germond and Lisa Parra; costume designer Hwa Park; and lighting designer Emma Rivera.
The development of Showgirls was made possible through residencies from Brooklyn Studios for Dance, Emily Harvey Foundation, E|MERGE Interdisciplinary Collaborative Residency and LiftOff Creative and Project Development Workshop. The work of Karen Bernard is a project of New Dance Alliance, which receives subsidized rehearsal support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Council on The Arts and the Mertz-Gilmore Foundation; and private support from individual patrons.
Your contribution makes a difference. Without your support, we would not be able to offer our unique programming and opportunities for artists: Performance Mix Festival (32nd annual festival coming June 7-10), LiftOff Creative and Project Development Workshop and Residency Program, subsidized rehearsal space in our sun-filled Tribeca location, and Karen Bernard’s creative work and performance including Showgirls.
And we have perks for you in return!
Come see your donation in action by choosing a ticket to the Performance Mix Festival night of your choice or admission to an intimate showing featuring LiftOff resident artists. Rather have something tangible to take home? How about collectable postcards featuring images of Karen Bernard’s Showgirls, or Removed Exposure, a limited edition book.
