The last two weeks went by very quickly. Inhaling the beauty, sounds and tastes of Bogliasco with a few trips to Genoa to satisfy my city self. Creative work has been slow and in spurts. Collecting and editing video images and samplings of music scores. The physical work has found me talking about what is on my mind and tipping my hat to the work of Sarah Michelson and Ivo Dimchev. Reinventing other artists’ work and making it your own is fun. This is my last full day. I will miss the 20-something barbecue dancing beach party, the onion focaccia, the fragrance of flowers, the ever-present sea, the dramatic Fellows, getting lost in Genoa and climbing the hill to go home… and the solitude.

It is a joy to get to know this group of invitees to The Liguria Study Center for the Arts and Humanities in Bogliasco. Of course I know Jane Goldberg, the forerunner in bringing tap to “downtown dance.” She has been sharing amazing stories and in particular her friendship with Gregory Hines. Often included in these dynamic discussions is Lee Hyla, a contemporary composer who is inspired by his roots in hard rock. Diana Cooper, interdisciplinary visual artist, does large scale installations. Her work is currently on exhibition at The Boiler, Brooklyn 191 n. 14 street, Brooklyn. Ramona Badescu is a renowned writer of children’s books. I am really excited because I bought her book “Pomelo Begins to Grow” on Amazon. The book was originally written in French, and has since been translated into several languages. Alla Kovgan is beginning a second dance film in collaboration with David Hinton inspired by the works of Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn. The first film in this series was “Nora”, based on the life of Zimbabwean-born dancer Nora Chipaumire. I will have the opportunity to learn more about the other Fellows, as we will begin to share presentations. Mine is the last – thank goodness.

A Diary: Week 1

Hello from Bogliasco.

This week was a time to settle in.  The beauty and restfulness of this place is distracting.  Sleeping, eating, walking, meeting the other fellows, watching Sarah Michelson’s “Daylight” and “Pina”, and setting up my villa to work.  Yes, my own villa with three bathrooms.  This is a highlight for me since my husband and I raised three children with one bathroom.
