Liony Garcia is a dancer and choreographer from Miami, FL. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New World School of the Arts. As a dancer, he has worked with BodyTraffic, brigid baker’s wholeproject, Bistoury Physical Theater and is a founding member of Rosie Herrera Dance Theater.
Garcia’s choreographic works have been commissioned by Miami Light Project, The Ringling Museum, National Performance Network, The Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation, The Aspen Institute, Pioneer Winter Collective and New York Live Arts. Liony is a three-time recipient of the Miami-Dade Dance Miami Choreographers’ Program. Corporeal Decorum was presented as a solo work in process as part of the Here & Now Festival: 2019. A trio version was presented in collaboration with The Wolfsonian Museum in a program titled Deco through Dance. The piece is a National Performance Network Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by Miami Light Project, The Ringling. It premiered at Miami Theater Center in April of 2022. Since its premiere, the piece has been performed at The Ringling Museum, Miami’s Design Preservation League and adapted to New World Symphony’s Soundscape Park. An excerpt of the piece was presented at Movement Research at The Judson Church. His most recent work Fantasy Punctured was presented as part of Fresh Tracks 2024 and is currently in development through residencies at The Floor and MLP.
As a solo performer, Liony has performed at Mana Contemporary, International Noise Music Conference, Bas Fisher Invitational and Edge Zone’s INDEX’21. He’s worked with director Celia Rowlson-Hall on her short film Swamp Lake and performed with filmmaker Claudio Marco Tulli on his film installation, Blasting Pixels, and was a guest performer in Ana Teresa Fernandez’s, On the Horizon land artinstallation. Most recently, he presented an improvised solo titled Up in the Clouds commissioned by Bistoury for 305 HAV INTERNATIONAL IMPROV FEST ’21’. The short film D3C05, a collaboration with Blaze Gonzalez and digital artist Hannah Gaengler was shown at ScreenDance Miami and Miami International Film Festival 2022.
Up in the Clouds Blending the aesthetics of punk music with physical theater, Up in the Clouds examines the shadow self through dynamic movement and structured improvisation. The piece utilizes body language, costume, and raw physical expression to externalize the character’s internal conflict, mirroring the unrestrained intensity of punk performance.

Since my friend, Chivas Sandage brought me to New Dance Alliance to rehearse in early 90’s, the place has become a part of my creative life. The long time existence of the studio and Performance Mix Festival are vital to the artists who seek and explore deep into their process. Whenever I step into the studio, it’s a new space with a lot of memories. I lie down on the floor, listen to my body, and I dance. It is valuable. The time in the space nurtures my practice and artistic vision. Karen’s vision of Lift-Off residency, feedback sessions, providing peer to peer connections are more significant than ever. It has been helping us to get through 2020 and we are going into 2021.”
