Emily Kyoko Shari is an artist from New York City. She explores the overlap between movement, space, and material in the form of sculptures, performance, and video. Movement is deeply tied to her sculptural practice and often a part of what she explores in her relationship to the physical world. She makes interactive objects primarily from raw materials such as fabric, rope, latex and metal that she activates through iterative movement during performance. She seeks to make sculptures that imply their own use, guided by the qualities of the materials they are made from, to anchor the types of movement she can create. She holds a BA in Studio Art from Hampshire College and previously trained at the School of American Ballet and The Martha Graham School.
circle:bloom circle:bloom consists of a bespoke circle fabricated from felt and rope which the artist interacts with using short movement phrases stemming from Laban/Bartenieff floorwork. Her body becomes a tool that activates the sculpture, transforming its presence and generating a symbiotic relationship between her body and the sculpture, giving form to a series of abstract emotional states.
“This current global situation is immensely sad and challenging, including the necessary cancellations/ postponements/ restructuring of opportunities, but we are so grateful for how you and the Performance Mix #34: Remotely Yours team has honored all of the artists involved – artistically, financially, and emotionally. In these uncertain, confusing times, we feel taken care of & clearly communicated with. Thank you.”
