Our donation-based cooking fundraisers are back this season! All donations support the continuation of our Black Artists Space to Create Residency program. Christopher Unpezverde Núñez, NDA Advisory Board member and Performance Mix Artist, will lead us in making Lomo/ Portobello Saltado and we will gather afterwards to eat and talk.
“I am Visually Impaired, Immigrant and Queer. From 2014 to 2018 I lived undocumented in the United States of America. During that time, because of my disability and immigration status, the only jobs I could get were in kitchens, mostly Latin American: cooking, cleaning and serving. Kitchens in NYC are very special places. In these chaotic, noisy and hot spaces, bonds, communities and families are formed. For immigrants like me, who arrive alone, without money and without support, the kitchens provide hope and food to continue, but America has a long and painful history with food and the undocumented hands that grow, prepare and serve it. Lomo saltado was one of the first dishes I learned to cook. It is a traditional South American dish and although I am Central American I learned to passionately love the food of all of Latin America. The flavors, colors and smells kept my memory and imagination alive. Join me for this cooking session. It will be full of love, politics, identity, gratitude and finger licking.”
