Ashley A. Friend

In Ashley A. Friend’s Outside The Outside the viewers are transported directly to a space where the performers move with prophetic foresight and navigate the stage through unconventional means.

Ashley A. Friend, a native of the Central Coast of California, has been primarily based in Brooklyn, NY since 2006. Her choreography has been performed throughout the USA, NYC, and abroad. She currently lives bi-coastally, splitting time between Brooklyn, NY and San Luis Obispo, CA. Friend’s most recent project is titled Owned (and also referred to as We Are Magic) and has been performed at Byrdciffe Theater (Woodstock, NY), Women in Motion (Brooklyn, NY), Hatch (NYC), New Dance Alliance (NYC), Poetry Church (various venues in San Luis Obispo, CA). This abstract work focuses on the relationship between the performers, sound, and interaction with the constructed environment and array of provocative props. It has been characterized as a shamanistic experience, compelling the audience to enter the choreographer’s vision. Her work was presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, residency at Performing Arts Forum in France, and residency and performance at the GVA Sessions in Geneva, Switzerland (2012). Friend received a scholarship to attend the Dance/USA conference in Denver, CO and NYC. She was a recipient of the prestigious danceWEB Scholarship and attended the five-week ImPulsTanz Festival in Vienna. She was also a resident artist at The Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) in Florida with mentor John Jaspers. Full season performances have been presented at Joyce SoHo and the 92nd St Y. and shared programming at Movement Research at Judson Church, The Flea, West-End Theater, Ailey Citigroup Theater, Women in Motion, DNA, Gibney Dance, New Dance Alliance, and Lincoln Center – among others.
