Sônia Lopes Soares

Sônia Lopes Soares
I’d rather the ocean (excerpt) – A group gets together with the objective of performing a dance piece at the peak of the Himalayas. A work about dance, high altitude, artificial breathing and human vulnerability.
Sônia Lopes Soares is a Brazilian director, choreographer and performer, working with dance and theater for 20 years. Cultivating a language through multidisciplinary collaboration, Soares constructs scenes using nonlinear, poetic narratives, mirroring the random and chaotic nature of the universe. This investigation encompasses vulnerability in the bodies, the line between fiction and reality, the ridiculous and tragic, and how they all interconnect. Sônia has received four prestigious grants from the city of São Paulo and the British Council to develop, produce, and perform her company’s work. Sônia has also collaborated and performed with several directors, choreographers, and film directors, including Gerald Thomas, Sandro Borelli and João Miguel, as a choreographer, performer, assistant director and movement coach. She has also danced with the classical ballet company of the City of Rio de Janeiro “Teatro Municipal”. Soares has performed in Brazil, Argentina, Peru, The United States, France at Pompidou, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2015).
