The Moving Architects

A fervently physicalized trio entailing risky movement, intense partnering, 10 feet of stretchy white fabric, and a driving sound score, Walled examines fight or flight responses found in the company’s personal and political lives. The Moving Architects channel the complexity of both current and historically lived female experience, making connections among bodies in motion, location, and space, as well as historical and physical experience.
Founded in 2007 in Chicago by Artistic Director Erin Carlisle Norton, The Moving Architects (TMA) is a female-centric nonprofit dance company currently based in NJ/NYC. Presented this spring as part of Elevate: A Triple Bill of Female Choreographers at Actors Fund Arts Center (Brooklyn), The Dance Complex (Boston), and Point Park University (PA), TMA has also been presented in recent years by Triskelion Arts, The Tank, Jersey City Theater Center, Offline+ at BAM Fisher, Bryant Park Dance Festival, I <3 Gibney Dance, Green Space, Chez Bushwick, Making Moves Dance Festival, and Montclair Art Museum, as well as with Pentacle at Ailey Citigroup Theater, Green Street Studios (Boston), and Dixon Place.
TMA has been featured at national venues including Links Hall (Chicago), Columbus Dance Theater (OH), KST Alloy Theater (PA), Wellspring Dance Theater (MI), and Wilson College (PA), among others. TMA has taught and toured throughout Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan with the US Department of State, Morocco, and Guatemala, with creative residencies at Nimbus Dance Works (NJ), High Concept Laboratories (Chicago), Columbus Dances Fellowship (OH), Links Hall (Chicago), and numerous creative residencies at Wilson College (PA).
Since 2015, TMA produces “Movers & Shapers: A Dance Podcast” a dance interview podcast led by Norton that features “shapers” in the dance field, and also runs the Community Movement Project in Montclair, NJ a program that provides pay-what-you-can movement classes to adults and kids. Norton holds a BFA and MFA in Dance from Ohio State University, and is a Certified Movement Analyst and Pilates Instructor.
