Meet Mei Yamanaka

I am a choreographer and dancer from Tokyo, Japan. I moved to NYC in the spring of 2008. As a choreographer I have a story for each of my pieces, but I think every audience member can formulate their own story as they watch – I want to spark their imagination and make them think. My choreographic work is based on investigating how the body moves down to a very minute level. I think it’s important to explore and develop the images that I create because if I can understand my movement clearly then I believe the audience can see my movement clearly and form their own stories. I am always thinking about how to use space, how to pause, how to use the body, the direction of focus… I am often inspired by daily life and I am always on the lookout to catch interesting scenes. I am doing a lot of contact work in my choreography. I think dancing with other people is a conversation. I can create movement with other dancers that I can’t do alone; I can fly higher, stay in the air longer… there are many possibilities that arise and then the choreography has more exciting dynamics. The key words to contact work for me are balance, listening, waiting, momentum, and trust.
