Black Artists Space to Create

This summer we launched the Black Artists Space to Create (BASC) Pilot Program. We offered talented dance artists, Johnnie Cruise Mercer, Leslie Cuyjet and Angie Pittman each a residency at Modern Accord Depot in Accord, NY, and hired Angie Pittman as Residency Director. Each artist received a two-week residency with unlimited access to a dance studio, full living space, and a stipend of $2,000. NDA offered this space for resting, dancing, creating, healing, grieving, laughing, and breathing. There was no expectation of production and artists did not have to present new work at the end of the residency. It is important to continue this program well into the future. Learn more about the BASC artists and the program here.
“We wish to radically reimagine what it means to serve Black artists right now and to do so in the specific spirit of reparations.”
Our Performance Mix Festival 35th Anniversary will be celebrated in Spring 2021. Stay tuned for updates!

Karen Bernard’s Lakeside confronted the memory of trauma and its lasting impact on the body. It had a great run in February at Douglas Dunn’s Studio; accompanied by a performance/ installation/ reception at ChaShaMa and performance at Judson Memorial Church. Original material developed with Lisa Parra, dramaturg Andi Villa Stover and digital composer Boris Billier with support from residencies L’Annexe-A and Obras Foundation.

Where should I begin? Performance Mix provided a consistent (year after year after year!) performance venue for works in progress that was just the right mix of openness and curation. Audiences were always plentiful and varied, not the usual downtown dance scene in crowd but truly filled with different sorts of people. Performance Mix also provided employment in the form of teaching in the public schools which was a lot of work for you, and a little much needed income for me. You’ve always been out there making opportunities for others. It made a huge difference in the arc of my career.
