“The festival was such a wonderfully supportive community of artists to perform amongst and a generous audience as well. The performances were inspiring and exceptionally well-run, which I appreciated.”

This summer we launched the Black Artists Space to Create (BASC) Pilot Program. We offered talented dance artists, Johnnie Cruise Mercer, Leslie Cuyjet and Angie Pittman each a residency at Modern Accord Depot in Accord, NY, and hired Angie Pittman as Residency Director. Each artist received a two-week residency with unlimited access to a dance studio, full living space, and a stipend of $2,000. NDA offered this space for resting, dancing, creating, healing, grieving, laughing, and breathing. There was no expectation of production and artists did not have to present new work at the end of the residency. It is important to continue this program well into the future. “We wish to radically reimagine what it means to serve Black artists right now and to do so in the specific spirit of reparations.”
