The LiftOff Residency takes place at NDA’s Studio in Tribeca and provides six New York City physical-based performance artists with a minimum of 36 hours of rehearsal space, a $500 stipend, and two feedback sessions. There will be two sessions: Fall (October to December) and Winter (January to March).
Feedback sessions will be held in-person. They are designed to share about the creative process and project development and participate in a community exchange. “Dance work” doesn’t always have to be presented, it can be a time to talk about what you’re curious about or currently working on. LiftOff Artists will meet with NDA Executive Director, Karen Bernard, at the beginning of the residency period to meet and schedule feedback sessions.
Interested artists must comply with studio regulations:
No loud music, no live music.
Barefoot dancing only.
Props only upon approval.
No more than four participants per artist/company
The studio is available Monday-Friday 10 am-6 pm. Since the studio is located within a private loft, NDA aims to book only 5 hours of rehearsal per day. While space may be available on the studio calendar, if an artist(s) has already booked 5 hours, no more rehearsals can be booked on that day. Please find more details about the studio here.
The LiftOff Residency offers a $500 stipend. If you are able, please consider making a donation to support the continuation and development of our programs.
Past LiftOff Artists are eligible to apply every two years.
LiftOff receives support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Council on the Arts, Harkness Foundation for Dance, and individual support.

What artists are saying

“My creative history with New Dance Alliance goes a way long. Since my friend, Chivas Sandage brought me to New Dance Alliance to rehearse in early 90’s, the place has become a part of my creative life. The long time existence of the studio and Performance Mix Festival are vital to the artists who seek and explore deep into their process. Whenever I step into the studio, it’s a new space with a lot of memories. I lie down on the floor, listen to my body, and I dance. It is valuable. The time in the space nurtures my practice and artistic vision. Karen’s vision of Lift-Off residency, feedback sessions, providing peer to peer connections are more significant than ever. It has been helping us to get through 2020 and we are going into 2021.”
